Bowmans Beach on Sanibel Island

Florida has over 1,000 miles of beaches and many are rated as the best in the United States. Our Beaches are interconnected to our wetlands by the flow of water that moves from our inland areas to the shorelines. Wetlands help to filter and clean the water that travels to our shorelines. Tourism is still the biggest part of the economy in SW Florida.  Ft. Myers and Sanibel have some of Florida’s finest beaches. Naples and Bonita Beach also have some world famous beaches.

One of my favorite beaches is Bunche Beach, the only one of its kind on the mainland. It’s a Lee County beach with modern composting toilets, seasonal kayak and paddle board rental (by a private company) and great birding and fishing. There is a great, carpeted spot for launching your own kayak or paddle craft. Limited, designated parking costs $2 an hour, similar to other county parks. Watch the tides. High tide is best for kayaking. Low tide is best for watching the fabulous sea and shore birds like skimmers, plovers, pelicans and osprey. The facility is at the eastern end of John Morris Road, off Sumerlin, after passing the exit to Fort Myers Beach and before Tanger outlets. It’s a relatively undiscovered sweet spot that’s enjoyed by the locals. And a bonus is that you don’t need to fight beach traffic or go over a bridge to get there!
